Sounion

Cape Sounion is a cape at the southernmost tip of Attica. It is well known because of the marble ruins of the ancient temple of the sea god Poseidon.Sounion located 69 km from Athens and is a fine place for day trips from Athens. At the Summit of the three sides of a slope above the sea, is located on an artificial terrace the famous marble temple of the god Poseidon from the 5th Century BC .
From there, it offers a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding islands of the Aegean. Nearby are the island of Makronisos and in a larger distance the islands of Kea, Kythnos and Serifos. On a clear day the view goes up to the island of Milos in 97 km away.From the east of Kea rises behind the 994 m highest peak of the island of Andros .To the west, the view over the Saronic Gulf to the mountainous shores of Argolis.
Cape Sounion is now a tourist attraction, especially the sunsets are impressive. As a popular destination, there will be a day from Athens to the National Straße 91 reaches along the west coast of Attica and runs a number of residential areas such as Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza. The site and its surroundings became a Greek national park.
